Dallas Marks invites the Mon Valley to celebrate “A Country Christmas” in support of the American Cancer Society. The Turtle Creek native and bandmates Chris Brenner on lead guitar, Bob “Crafty” Crafton on pedal steel, Justin Brown on bass, and Bill Gendron on drums are set to perform a full set of original tunes and country favorites at Gen. Smedley D. Butler American Legion Post 701 in White Oak on Dec. 1 at 9 p.m.A portion of the evening’s proceeds — ticket sales, bake sale, Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle — will benefit the American Cancer Society.American Cancer Society representatives said 60 percent of donations will benefit cancer research, and the remaining 40 percent will go toward local cancer prevention, detection, education and direct patient services.“We normally do a few benefits each year,” Marks said. “ We decided to go with the American Cancer Society this year because it hits close to home for a lot of people, myself included.”Marks said he has lost several friends and loved ones to cancer, including his grandfather who passed away in 1997. He knows much of his audience has experienced the same.In connection with the benefit, Marks and bandmates re-worked a song they had written two years ago. The new version reflects a theme of loss during the holiday season and will be released during the Dec. 1 event.“I wanted to talk about those who lose loved ones and how the holidays affect them,” Marks said.“All I Got For Christmas” was recorded Sunday at Soundscape Studio in McKeesport.Recording engineer Dave Watson said Soundscape Studio was thrilled to help with Dallas Marks’ benefit recording.“If we can help with any benefit or show our support for local music, we will,” Watson said.Marks said participation in the American Cancer Society event and other benefits has been the right thing to do in his career of five years and counting.“A lot of people have given to me over the years and offered a hand to help me,” Marks said. “If this is the least I can do to help the public in return, then I’m glad to do it.”Gen. Smedley D. Butler American Legion Post 701 in White Oak is located at the intersection of Pennsylvania and Capitol streets. Admission is $5 per person at the door. For more information, or directions, call the Legion at 412-672-7994.
